Ending the year on a Joyful Note
On Tuesday, December 9, 2014, the Independence Garden Club held their final meeting of the year at the Healthy Lifestyles Senior Center at 11:30 am. Hostesses, Joellen Yeager and Nancy Weber provided creative centerpieces and tasty nut cups.
Prior to the delicious luncheon, Nancy Weber and Keith Megonigle had fun leading the singing of Christmas carols as Eleanor Hand played the piano.
President, Dixie Bagby introduced the speaker, Nancy Elliott. Nancy explained basic design techniques while cleverly creating a large Christmas wreath using multiple elements. When completed, Darlene Lorenz was delighted to have won the beautiful creation.
Donna Harms not only decorated the Garden Club tree for the Depot display, she also outbid others to buy it back. She then brought it to the meeting and had members select an ornament for their own use, putting the term recycling to good use.
Secretary, Eleanor Hand read the minutes and took roll call for the seventeen members present.
Steve Pilcher, Treasurer, gave his report and collected outstanding bills and dues. Dave Higgins presented the club with a memorial gift of $100.00 for his wife, Connie. Following the meeting, Steve presented the Food Pantry with the numerous paper products, donated by club members, along with a check for $200.00.
Darla Miller selected three new books entitled “Succulents Simplified”, “Deep-Rooted Wisdom” and “An Amish Garden” for club donation to the Independence Public Library.
Club reports have been finalized and the Book of Evidence is ready to be mailed for State judging. The December floral decoration for LTC was donated by Lynda Fiester and Ruth Hamilton will provide one for January.
The club is happy to receive new members, Brenda Ristvedt (who was unable to attend today) and Steve Pederson. Next years meetings will start on Tuesday, February 24, 2015, and we welcome others to contact Darlene Lorenz at 319-334-2623 with any questions.
