Sharing Fresh Blooms and Photos
President, Dixie Bagby presided over the August 26th meeting of the Independence Garden Club which was held at the Long Term Care Unit. Eleanor Hand read the minutes and roll call. The eleven members attending had interesting and varied responses of a “garden goof”. Steve Pilcher gave the Treasurer’s report and Arla Senko reminded members to report tree plantings. Darla Miller provided the August floral for the LTC. Members were reminded to continue to press flowers to be used at the November meeting to create book covers for 2015.
Lynda Fiester reported on the July Flower Show which was held at the Garden Gate building during the Buchanan County Fair. We received many positive comments from a record number attending to view the entries, displays and awards and thank you for your interest. We would welcome and assist anyone interested in entering next year. It is simple and fun.
The children, youth and adults attending the Friday events had a great time. Our combined efforts with the Quasqueton Garden Club and the Buchanan County Master Gardeners resulted in making a profit of $217.00 which was presented to the “Pie Ladies”. Their previous efforts resulted in the purchase and installation of beautiful white fencing at the entrance of the Fair grounds. Thanks to the Fair Board, as well, for working hard to make the area much more attractive.
Members enjoyed a delicious luncheon before creating bouquets from their gardens for each resident. Everyone enjoyed seeing many framed photos taken by Eleanor Hand and Keith Megonigle and hearing the story of how it was done.
The September 23rd meeting will be held at the Senior Center at 11:30 am and will feature Rod Schabacker speaking on “Foundation Landscaping: Design and Maintenance”. The public is welcome to join us by calling Darlene Lorenz @ 334-2623 to make a reservation.
Editor – call Lynda Fiester @ 334-2234 with any questions about the article. And again many thanks
