Independence Garden Club News
Fifteen members of the Independence Garden Club and two special guests from the Lamont Garden Club enjoyed a delicious luncheon at the Buchanan County Senior Center on February 23, 2016 with Donna Harms and Eleanor Hand serving as hostesses.
Judy Stevens, a Master Gardener from Linn County, gave an insightful and informative presentation titled “Plants of the Bible.” After two years of research, with the help of her 97 yr. old mother, Judy found there are 125 plants mentioned in the Bible (many in Song of Solomon). She shared samples of many of these plants as she told of the location and uses of each. These samples included trees, spices, vegetables, fruits, and flowers. What a wealth of information!
Following Judy’s presentation, President Joellen Yeager opened the business meeting. She read a thank you from the Independence Food Pantry and one from Sustainable Independence for our donations. Secretary Ruth Hamilton took Roll Call with “sharing a recycling tip” and read the minutes. Treasurer Dorothy Decker gave the treasurer report. It was reported that the Independence Garden Club has given $1450 in charitable donations in the past year.
Discussion on goals for the upcoming year included renovating the Depot Garden. Joellen Yeager and Shirley Rozendahl will head a committee to discuss further. The suggestion of contributing a work of art instead of a decorated tree or basket of gardening supplies as our donation to Christmas at the Depot was introduced to the group. In further business the club voted to pay for a lifetime membership for Nancy Weber as she is our District II Director. Lynda Fiester shared information about the flower show at the Buchanan County Fair. The judges are in place and this year “Tool People” will greet our visitors. On February 5th Lynda Fiester and Ruth Hamilton assisted with making Valentine crafts at Lexington Estates while Dixie Bagby provided the monthly floral arrangement.
The next meeting will be held March 22 at Prairie Hills at 11:30. Our speaker will be Jeanette Beyer delighting us with her “Bicycle Tour of Viet Nam.” The public is always invited to our meetings. Please call Darlene Lorenz at 319-334-2623 to make a meal reservation.
