New Frontiers by Returning to Heirloom Gardens
A pleasant fall afternoon and the promise of a delightful speaker brought a large gathering for the October 27th meeting of the Independence Garden Club. Following a delicious luncheon at the Senior Center, those present were privileged to see an informative power point presentation by David Cavagnaro, founder and President of the Pepperfield project in Decorah.
President Dixie Bagby conducted the meeting and thanked hostesses Ruth Hamilton and Dorothy Decker and for our many guests attending. Five darling pumpkin shell centerpieces, filled with arrangements of fresh flowers, were given as door prizes.
Steve Pilcher gave the Treasurer’s report. Eleanor Hand read the September minutes as twenty members and several potential members responded to the Roll Call.
A large garden planter, which was skillfully painted by Arla Senko, was on display. It is to hold a treasure of garden related items and will be taken to the Depot the first of November for the annual Christmas silent auction.
Members discussed and voted to hold the annual plant sale at the First Presbyterian Church on Saturday, May 13, 2016. This will be the weekend following Mother’s Day. Recently former member Dorothy Crowell donated many plants for the sale and Darlene Lorenz facilitated finding them new winter homes among many club members.
Shirley Rozendaal and Joellen Yeager assisted the residents of LTC with crafts on October 2nd and Nancy Weber provided the October floral arrangement.
Nancy Weber reported on the Central Region meeting held in Cedar Rapids October 3rd – 5th.
The Nominating Committee presented a slate of officers for 2016 which was unanimously approved. Joellen Yeager, President; Nancy Weber, Vice President; Ruth Hamilton, Secretary; Dorothy Decker, Treasurer; and Steve Pilcher, Assistant Treasurer will all be installed at the December meeting.
On November 24th, member Shirley Rozendaal will be speaking on Bluebirds at the Senior Center at 12:30. Following her presentation, members will use their dried flowers to make decorative book covers for 2016. The public is welcome to attend. Please call Darlene Lorenz @ 319-334-2623 if you desire a luncheon reservation.
