You too can be a Helper for Bluebirds
Independence Garden Club members Carol Fisher and Brenda Ristvedt acted as hostesses for the lovely luncheon served at the Senior Center on November 24th.
Thirteen members and two guests heard Wendy VanDeWalle as she represented the Sustainable Independence organization and their project with the Independence Jr/Sr. High School.
Shirley Rozendaal’s love and concern for Bluebirds was evident during her informative power point presentation as their habitat has been severely threatened She actively monitors and maintains the Bluebird houses at her own residence as well as traveling repeatedly to do likewise at several other locations. She shared the tools needed on her quest and the logs to monitor her findings. Shirley strongly encouraged others to establish houses and even included blueprints for success.
President Dixie Bagby gave the Treasurer’s report and Secretary Eleanor Hand took Roll Call and read the minutes. Dues were collected for 2016. The program committee is making good progress and members selected areas of interest to help. Shirley Rozendaal and Lynda Fiester assisted with the November crafts at the Lexington Estates and Lynda Fiester provided the monthly floral arrangement.
Club members voted to donate $50 to the Senior Center for placemats and napkins. Members also voted to donate $500 dollars to the Sustainable Independence project at the Jr/Sr. High School instead of offering a Dollars for Scholars scholarship this year. The club will again discuss possible 2017 scholarships for the Independence and Jesup High Schools.
Following the business meeting, members shared their dried pressed florals to create gorgeous 2016 Yearbook covers.
The next meeting will be on December 8th at Prairie Hills. New officers for 2016 and 2017 will be installed, books will be donated to the Independence Public Library and paper products and a monetary donation will be made to the Independence Food Pantry. Please call Darlene Lorenz for dinner reservations at 319-334-2623.
Thank You
