Spring is Blooming and Members are Bustling
The Independence Garden Club was pleased to have several members of the Quasqueton Garden Club and one guest join them at the Buchanan County Senior Center on May 26th. Vice President, Joellen Yeager presided over the meeting as Bonnie Cook and Darlene Lorenz served as hostesses.
Following the delicious noon luncheon, presenters Darlene Lorenz, Arla Senko and Anita Miller covered topics of floral design and gave many helpful hints as the July flower schedule was reviewed.
Eleanor Hand took roll call and read the April minutes. Steve Pilcher gave the Treasurer’s report. Carol Fisher provided the May floral for the LTC unit. Nancy Weber gave an update on District II meetings and Shirley Rozendaal provided a timely and urgent need to protect our wildlife by cutting the plastic can connectors before disposing of them.
The month of May has been extremely busy as six members of the club attended the District II Federated Garden Club meeting in Cedar Rapids on the 1st and received awards for their 2014 Book of Evidence. Joellen Yeager presented the club’s $350 scholarship to Collin Gosse in Jesup on the 5th. The club’s annual plant and bake sale was held on the 9th at the Presbyterian Church. We are grateful to so many who graciously donated items and allowed us to dig in their gardens and to the faithful public whose attendance made it such a success.
Thank you notes from Diana Johnson and Collin Gosse were read.
Members will be presenting floral donations to various businesses in Jesup, Rowley and Independence to celebrate National Garden week (7th – 13th) and reservations were made to attend the State meeting in Iowa City on June 19th.
The next meeting will be at the Senior Center on June 23rd. Nancy Weber and Lynda Fiester will be discussing “Prepping for the Fair” at 12:30. (Horticultural and Design entries will be judged at 10:30am on July 8th). We invite any to attend as new information is being presented. If you care to make a reservation for the noon meal, please call Darlene Lorenz @ 334-2623.
