A Welcome Spring Outing
On April 28th, twelve members of the Independence Garden Club traveled to Waterloo for a guided tour of the Petersen & Tietz Greenhouses. Following Heidi’s helpful information on the heat, sun and disease tolerance of many new plants, members were free to browse and make their purchases.
The group then reconvened in the Community Room of the Jesup Library where President, Dixie Bagby opened the monthly meeting and members answered roll call of their “gardening goal”. Treasurer, Steve Pilcher read the March 24th minutes and gave the Treasurer’s report and Lynda Fiester took the minutes.
The club is looking forward to the May 9th plant sale. It will again be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Independence from 8am – 11am. Many wonderful plant donations have already been given and new “dig sites” are scheduled.
Seven members plan to attend the District II meeting in Hiawatha on May 1st.
On May 5th, the club will be presenting a $350.00 scholarship to a graduating Jesup student, through the Dollars for Scholars program.
Lynda prepared and delivered twenty inserts for the “Absolutely Indy” bags. Schedules for the July Flower Show will soon be available in the six county libraries or by contacting Lynda Fiester at 334-2234. A new and much easier method of completing the entry cards is being introduced, as suggested by last years flower judge.
Carol Fisher will provide the May floral for the LTC unit.
Thank you notes from Arla Senko and the Food Pantry were read.
Shirley Rozendaal reported on the Decorah club meeting she attended with member and District II Director, Nancy Weber.
The meeting was adjourned at 1:30pm. Members ended their outing in Independence with a leisurely lunch and relaxed conversation at the “Sweet Spot”.
The next meeting will be held at 11:30am on May 26th at the Senior Center with the Quasqueton Club and will be on floral design. As always the public is welcome to attend. If you wish to make a dinner reservation, please call Darlene Lorenz at 334-2623.
